DIAGNOdent is a diagnostic tool used in the dental
field. Previously dentists had only an explorer (hand pick) & x-rays to
detect decay on the chewing surfaces of teeth. Though x-rays are a very
important tool in aiding in decay between teeth, they are only 50%-75%
effective in detecting decay on the chewing surfaces when it is small. With the
DIAGNOdent, decay is detected sooner.
The DIAGNOdent is a diode laser light that is
passed over the surface of the tooth. Decay reflects back at a different
wavelength. As the light is passed over the tooth, it gives a digital reading
that scores the soundness of the enamel surface. This information along with
the x-rays, softness of the crevice, and staining of the groove assist in the
diagnose & treatment of decay while it is still small. The laser light will
not harm the human eye and does not alter, treat or harm the tooth.

The DIAGNOdent is used on children and adults
alike. It is a painless, noninvasive procedure that does require the patient to
be in the dental chair a little longer, but there are no additional charges for
this service. This is used at the time of a dental examination.
